Introduction to BioHPC Cloud (WCMC)
April 7-9 2020

NOTE: This workshop is now open both to Ithaca Campus and WCMC.

This workshop is designed to introduce biologists to working in the interactive Linux environment of our BioHPC Cloud servers. We will first explain how the BioHPC Cloud fits in the broader context of computational facilities offered by the Bioinformatics Facility, and then explain the BioHPC Cloud in more detail. The topics will include:
  • Overview of computational infrastructure at Bioinformatics Facility
  • Setting up your BioHPC account
  • Overview of BioHPC Credit Accounts and hours
  • How to reserve and manage time on BioHPC Cloud servers
  • Storage in BioHPC: quotas, storage groups and purchasing extra space
  • Remote access to the workstations: ssh with text, VNC and X-Windows
  • Transferring data in and out of BioHPC

The presented material will be illustrated by hands-on exercises hosted on dedicated servers of the BioHPC Cloud. The servers will be accessed using the Secure SHell (ssh) protocol. To participate in the exercises you will need to use your own desktop or laptop ("client"). For links to client software, instructions, and more information on access to BioHPC machines, please refer to the following document: biohpc.cornell.edu/lab/doc/Remote_access.pdf. To streamline your workshop participation, we recommend that install the client software in advance.

Access to BioHPC Cloud servers requires a BioHPC account. If you do not yet have an account on the BioHPC Cloud system, we will create one for you. Also, we will assign a machine for you to work on during and after the workshop.

This workshop will be conducted remotely via Zoom. The link to the workshop Zoom session will be sent to all participants in advance via e-mail.

The machine allocations will be posted here.
