Details for Globus connect personal (If the copy-pasted commands do not work, use this tool to remove unwanted characters)
Name: | Globus connect personal |
Version: | 3.2.0 |
OS: | Linux |
About: | Turn any BioHPC machine into a personal Globus endpoint |
Added: | 12/18/2023 5:14:08 PM |
Updated: | |
Link: | https://docs.globus.org/globus-connect-personal/ |
Notes: | Globus Connect Personal will turn a BioHPC machine into a personal Globus endpoint. This means that you will be able to transfer files between this machine and other Globus endpoints. The limitation of this type of endpoint is that it will be reachable only by your own Globus ID. You cannot share any data within the enpoint with other Globus users.
How to activate Globus Connect Personal on a BioHPC machine:
Log in by ssh to a machine (e.g., cbsuabc ).
Run the following command:
/programs/globusconnectpersonal-3.2.0/globusconnectpersonal -setup --no-gui
The above will ask for a code and produce a (long) URL pointing to a Globus page where you will have to log in with your Globus credentials. Paste this URL into any web browser (e.g., on your laptop) to retrieve the code and set a (aribtrary) label for the new endpoint. Then enter the code as asked by the setup and specify an endpoint name (again, an arbitrary string), which will complete the registration and create a directory $HOME/.globusonline . Rename this directory to something specific to the host you are working on, e.g.,
mv $HOME/.globusonline $HOME/.gcpcbsuabc
Edit the file $HOME/.gcpcbsuabc/lta/config-paths . Specify directories which are supposed to be accessible (along with their subfolders) to Globus, e.g.,
~/,0,1
/local,0,0
A '1' in the last column means that the folder will be accessible to Globus in read/write mode (like the ~/ , i.e., your home directory in the exaple above) , while a '0 ' means read-only mode (like /local in the example above). The number in the middle is irrelevant for Globus Connect Personal.
Upon successful completion of the registration and path access configuration, start the server, pointing to the configuration directory you just renamed:
/programs/globusconnectpersonal-3.2.0/globusconnectpersonal -dir $HOME/.gcpcbsuabc -start &
If everything goes well, when you log in to your Globus Online account and click on 'Collections' and 'Administered by you', you will see your new endpoint (in green) under a the name you specified during the registration process. You can then click on it, open in Globus File Manager in one of its panes. You will be able to browse to any directory you entered in $HOME/.gcpcbsuabc/lta/config-paths . In the other pane, open the other endpoint you wish to communicate with and initiate file transfer.
When you are done transferring files, or when you simply want to inactivate the enpoint for a while, run the following:
/programs/globusconnectpersonal-3.2.0/globusconnectpersonal -dir $HOME/.gcpcbsuabc -stop
On Globus website the endpoint will then be displayed in red, as inactive. You can then either restart the endpoint using the same command with the -start option, or de-register the endpoint completely from Globus using the 'Delete Collection' button. In the latter case, if you want the endpoint resumed, you will have to delete the config directory $HOME/.gcpcbsuabc and repeat whole process staring with the registration.
