Running Matlab on hosted servers with purchased MATLAB license

Some labs with hosted servers have purchased their own matlab license. In this case, you can just log onto the machine and type 'matlab' (the executable should already be in the PATH). These lab groups include the ECCO cluster, cbsuysun, cbsugg02, and others. If you are unsure, check with your PI or with the BioHPC team. If the license expires, you may purchase a renewal and send the license information to BioHPC.

Running MATLAB on other BioHPC machines

Step 1: reserve a license (and a machine if necessary)

Bioinformatics Facility has purchased two one-user licenses that users can 'check out' through the reservation system. Visit the 'My reservations' page (https://biohpc.cornell.edu/lab/labres.aspx) and choose the 'software' option in the top drop-down list. You can then see the availability of the matlab licenses and make a reservation for up to a week.

In order to recoup BioHPC's cost for the licenses, the MATLAB reservation is paid for in compute units, at a rate of 0.1 compute units per hour ($3.72/day; less if compute units were purchased in bulk). If you wish to make long-term use of MATLAB, it will be cheaper to buy your own license.

The MATLAB license reservation does not grant you access to a server. In order to use it, you must also have access to a BioHPC machine, either through a hosted server, or by reserving an appropriate machine.

The MATLAB license reservation only grants you permission to run MATLAB on one server at a time. If you violate this, you will lose the privilege of reserving the license in the future.

Step 2: run MATLAB

Before using the program, set the path to the MATLAB executables as follows (once per login session, or include the command below in your /home/$USER/.bashrc file):

export PATH=/programs/MATLAB/R2020a/bin:$PATH

MATLAB graphical interface

To use MATLAB's graphical interface, you need graphics generated by MATLAB on a remote Linux machine to be displayed on your local machine (e.g., laptop). For this to happen, you need to either log in to the linux machine in graphical mode using VNC, or connect via ssh with X11 forwarding enabled and an X-windows manager running on your laptop. Consult https://biohpc.cornell.edu/lab/userguide.aspx?a=access for more information about these general access topics. Once a graphics-capable connection is established, open a terminal on the Linux machine, run the export command above, then type matlab followed by ENTER key. The MATLAB interface window will appear after a few seconds.
